The Mothersbaugh Family quilt was made for grandma and grandpa Mothersbaugh for Christmas.  Grandma and grandpa are dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Their five children and spouses are the elves.  The grandchildren’s names are on the ornaments hanging loose from the top of the quilt.  And let’s not forget grandma and grandpa’s little dog, the angel on the top of the tree.

THE ARROYO

.

The Arroyo in Pasadena has a stream (once a river) at the base with hills covered in bushes, pine and oak trees with lots of rocks.  Some of these rocks have been gathered and built into walls and walkways leading up to the street above.  In the distance are the San Gabriel Mountains which have snow in the winter.  In making this quilt I painted cotton fabric and cheese cloth for the river, landscaping jute on the hills, yarns in several places, jute string along the  walk way, painted dryer sheets for trees, raw edge appliqué for the rocks, hand quilting as well as machine quilting.

THE OAK TREE

The live oak tree is protected in Pasadena, California.  This is my tribute to the mighty oak.  The background was machine quilted with 3/4″ horizontal lines.  I then machine washed and dried the piece which left the background a little wavy due to the cotton batting shrinking more than the top and bottom cotton fabrics.  I painted cheese cloth which was then twisted to make the trunk and branches and sewn in place.  The leaves are made up of 1/2″ pieces of yarn that had been felted into the background then machine quilted.  43″ x 49″

THE MISSING PIECE

This quilt was made for Charlie Pilliod. It was inspired by the book “The Missing Piece” by Shel Silvertein. I followed the story line (my condensed version) and quilted a continuous line telling the story of a circle looking for it’s missing piece, eventually finding the piece and decided that it was just fine without it. The quilt is 45″ x 65″, batik fabric, machine pieced and quilted.

EVAN’S FISH TANK

This quilt was made for Evan.  The fish, rocks, and cotton plants are raw edge appliqué.  Yarn, beads, painted cheesecloth, a shell and cotton batik fabrics were used to make the quilt.  I machined quilted and beads were added by hand.  What a fun piece to make!
