THE ARROYO

.

The Arroyo in Pasadena has a stream (once a river) at the base with hills covered in bushes, pine and oak trees with lots of rocks.  Some of these rocks have been gathered and built into walls and walkways leading up to the street above.  In the distance are the San Gabriel Mountains which have snow in the winter.  In making this quilt I painted cotton fabric and cheese cloth for the river, landscaping jute on the hills, yarns in several places, jute string along the  walk way, painted dryer sheets for trees, raw edge appliqué for the rocks, hand quilting as well as machine quilting.

Fish Party

Fish Party

While living in Florida I used to sell individual fish mounted on stretcher boards.  After moving to California I decided to put all the fish I had into a large wall hanging.  I bordered the fish with black batik fabric, added sea life, embellished with yarn and beads.  Some of the borders were cut out and ribbon was added.  The fish are made with commercial batik fabrics, layers of tulle and shimmery fabrics, ribbons, yarns, beads and then machine quilted.  The quilt is 62″ x 64″.  Details below.

View From My Window

As I look out of my living room window I have a view of the San Gabriel Mountains in Pasadena, California.  I took photos of some specific items–a house, a palm tree, cypress trees, the walk below, the neighbor’s light, another neighbors stairs to their house and one of our oleanders.  These were printed on fabric and heavily quilted in the abstract quilt.   Commercial batik fabrics, cotton batting and a print backing were used to make this quilt.  The quilt is 42″ x 32″.

Tuscany

I went to Italy with my friend, Maureen, for three weeks.  I made this quilt for her including photos of  some of the places we had been, a tree in Positano, Church bells in Assisi, several from our walk in Cinque Terre and an olive tree in Tuscany.  It was a wonderful trip seeing friends and Brother Joe, Maureen’s son as well as the beautiful country and all that it has to offer.  At the end of our walk in Monterosso, part of Cinque Terre, we stopped for lunch at a place looking out toward the sea.  We had finished eating and were ready to catch the train back to our hotel.  I asked the waiter for our check and he said “Relax, there will be another train today and if not, then tomorrow.”  He was right, there was another train later.
